Update on Adoption
Programs for Florida Families
Gay and Lesbian Applicants
- After a three decade long ban prohibiting
otherwise qualified Gay and Lesbian people from
adopting the recent Gill case has rendered the
law essentially unenforceable. The Alliance
for Children applauds the hard work of the people
that helped overturn the law in hopes of finding
more loving homes for children in need. The
following was issued by the Florida Department
of Children and Families and reflects the approach
The Alliance for Children will take in qualifying
potential adoptive parents:
"As I am sure you have learned, the Florida
law banning gay men and lesbians from adopting
has been ruled unconstitutional by the Third
District Court of Appeals in a 3-0 vote. Based
on the ruling that the current law is unconstitutional
you are no longer to ask prospective adoptive
parents whether they are heterosexual, gay or
lesbian nor are you to use this as a factor
in determining the suitability of applicants
to adopt.
Focus your attention on the quality of parenting
that prospective adoptive parents would provide,
and their commitment to and love for our children."
We look forward to working with ALL qualified
applicants.
