General information about Vietnam
(Statistical information taken from the 2000 CIA Fact Book)

Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia, bordering China, Laos, and Cambodia. Although the country is roughly the size of New Mexico, (329,560 sq. km) Vietnam's population is an astounding 78,773,873 and growing. The land in Vietnam varies from low, flat deltas in the south and north to the central highlands and Mountains of the far north. Nearly three quarters of the country is mountainous. You can expect a tropical climate in the south. The north has a distinctive rainy season (mid-May to mid-September) and then a warm, dry season (mid-October to mid-March). The capital, Hanoi, has a population of 1 million people. The growing population and urbanization of Hanoi is causing great environmental distress in that area.

Vietnamese people and culture

The population of Vietnam is about 85-90% ethnic Vietnamese, 3% ethnic Chinese. Buddhism is the most popular belief system, however other religious beliefs include Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Islam.

The cuisine of Vietnam is based on the staple of rice, with many vegetables, meats, and fish. Spices and sauces are added to many of the dishes to create hundreds of variations. They are particularly good at preparing vegetarian dishes, and the coffee is outstanding! Everyday dress for men and women is slacks paired with a casual sport shirt or cotton blouse.
